An Exploratory Hike at Big Basin

I felt antsy to get back on my mountain bike, but it rained yesterday. Not too hard, but I decided to give the trails another day to dry out, so I took on my friend Alison’s invitation to a hike at Big Basin. It’s been so long since I did a serious hike last time that I got nervous while packing the night before. Erik kindly pointed out that all I needed to do would be as simple as putting one foot in front of the other. That helped.

I met up with Alison and Pat whom I met through Low Key Hill Climbs and Alison’s friends including Heather (also a cyclist), Mandy (she writes restaurant reviews for the Chronicle. Cool eh?), and Warren (Alison’s ex-coworker and big time skier). A very fun and lay-back group to be with. We started our hike from Waddell Beach on Hwy 1, and hiked up to Wheat Overlook. It was an out and back trip. It’s amazing how much more you see when not on a bike.

All the photos are in the gallery. Here are a few highlights.
